CHAPTER 9

CYNTHIA

“Can I ask you a question?” I ask as we frost the finally baked and cooled cookies.

His tongue peeks out from the side of his mouth in concentration as he pipes buttons on the little gingerbread man. The sight is almost enough for me to forget my question. I shouldn’t do anything to ruin this moment.

I’m thoroughly sated from our earlier frosting adventure, but when I look at him bent in concentration over the various cookie cutouts, I feel something more than lust. I’m urged on by the matching ache between my legs and in my heart.

“Sure,” he says.

“Why didn’t I know you have brothers?”

He pauses his piping and looks up at me. He tilts his head in the same way my reindeer do when I’m showing them a new trick. It’s an interesting blend of intrigue and confusion.

He puts the piping bag down and stands up to his full height. “It didn’t come up.”

“I feel like that’s pretty basic information.”

“Should I have told you the night I painted you green while you dripped onto my floor? Or should I have paused our delicious game in my bedroom?”

“Is that all this is to you? A game?”

The words come out before I can think better of it. I don’t even know if I actually want it to be more than a game. Sex and orgasms are easy. It’s the other stuff that scares me.

“Do you not like our games?” he asks.

“That’s not what I’m asking.” I do like our games, maybe too much. The problem is that I also like the bits in between, like the way he holds me against him and the way his heart beats steadily against my cheek.

“Are you asking if I like you?”

My cheeks burn. That's exactly what I want to know, but somehow asking feels more intimate than being spread bare on his countertop.

I move towards the sink and start piling in the dishes so I don’t have to look directly at him. “Yeah, that’s what I’m asking.”

“Yes, I do like you, Little Elf.” He comes up behind me and takes the dishes from my hand. He places them on the counter and turns me around to face him. “I thought I made that abundantly clear when I let you into my home again and again. I do not tolerate humans in my home.”

He tolerates me.

That’s it. That’s all this is to him, a game with some clueless human. Little does he know, or maybe little does he care, that I’m catching feelings for him. He might be the warm and fuzzy one on the outside, but when he looks at me like he might actually want to keep me, I’m the one who feels warm and fuzzy on the inside.

“What is your face doing right now?” he asks.

“Nothing, I just actually like you.”

Something crosses his face and his expression softens. His eyes widen. He looked almost like a puppy I want to gather up and cuddle.

In the blink of an eye, a vicious smile slides into place.
